Part I down. Flaubert paints such a compelling portrait of the bored housewife that is simultaneously sympathetic and scrutinizing. I love how complex Emma is. While she assumes some degree of superiority over Charles because of her ‘elegance’ , she’s just as hollow, only in a different sense. She has no interest in actually being a part of the greater world, she just wants to simply adopt the aesthetics of it
