Volume 2 of 4 finished.
I read the first volume over two years ago. Part of the delay is that I had a kid, but honestly, I simply wasn’t equipped to understand the book properly.
Now, I understand Chinese culture a lot better (I learned French in my 20s, I’m trying to learn Mandarin in my 30s), and my first impression stands — this will be one of the best books I ever read.

I can already tell this is going to be one of the best books I'll ever read.
It's painted on a mind-bogglingly grand scope. The machinations of the powerful are played out over decades. I think that's a theme that is both timeless and excruciatingly hard to depict.
It's full of those charming little mythical episodes that make characters larger than life, iconic, almost like a holy book.
