finally! the first interesting essay. didion gets a rejection letter from her university of choice and cries and daydreams about commiting suicide. she also writes a paper for a friend; he gets an A but when she submits the same paper she gets a B-. (GIRL! I've been there...)

i started this thinking 'oh essay collections, they're good to dip into.' but now i feel like there's something wrong with me because i'm not into this. it feels too cold, the nancy reagan one in particular.

on the second essay. it's a bit difficult to understand without context - sentences like "i was strictly a gardena player, lowball" made zero sense to me and i had to google keywords (gardena, lowball) to understand. it was the same with the first essay. things that were perhaps common in the 60s or 70s but have now disappeared often seem to be the subjects

skipped the foreword which was an alarming 20% of this whole book??! the first essay is about the underground press. i have no idea what that is or what the australian equivalent is to the titles she's quoting like the 'free press' in los angeles
