Heroine Marshal Starr is deeply emotionally scarred, much like Texas Ranger Darren Mathews in Bluebird, Bluebird by Attica Locke. Both characters are flawed, yet sympathetic as they attempt to numb their painful trauma with alcohol, and in Carrie Starr's case also marijuana.
