Walser's life was psychic penury, but he seems to have used his novels to transcend his misfortunes by turning life into a fairytale. The critic Elias Canetti noticed that Walser's uncanniness comes from his desperate attempts to suppress his innermost anxieties and agonies, to create an alternate world utterly cleansed of even the mildest pain. The effect is pitiful and sad and radiant, all at once.
