They saved her! The plan went perfectly, perhaps something to be criticized about it, and everyone made it. I think the back half of the book is slightly worse than the front. There are a lot more situations that go better than they should for Kazi, Jase, and friends. The family forgives Kazi far too quickly and easily, and they even begin blaming themselves, which I think certain family members wouldn’t do.

Everything started happening now. I’m glad Pearson decided to do it early so we have more time in the latter half of the book for the heroes to be heroes.

So much happened here. Paxton being a good guy was surprising.

Nash and Lydia don’t hate Kazi as much as I thought.

How does Jase manage to save Kazi? Or does he even save her at all? Will Kazi escape from the king? He’s cunning, and not the bumbling fool he was thought to be, as I suspected from the secret message he had.

Jase isn’t dead, as I suspected he wasn’t. I didn’t expect him to have wound up in the Vendan settlement to survive, but I suppose it makes sense. This section was very awkward in my mind, because Kazi just has nothing to do and no control. She has no agency.

I don’t think Jase is actually dead. Pearson played things fairly straight last time and I doubt she’ll change it up now, especially with something so big. I did like how the first few chapters built up a serene sense of hope, like everything would be sorted out. They even laid out things for the reader to expect upon their return, only to upend everything once they finally got there.
