Dang this book might go from a 4 to 5 star read. The commentary on morals, violence, colonialism, racism, language, and character development is top tier.

Mary Dorta Hey! I’ve been wanting to read this book for a while but I’m not sure if I’d be comfortable with some of the things I’ve heard is in it. What age rating would you say it would be for and what are the biggest content warnings you think people should know going into it? Thank you so much!

Isabel M Yes! It definitely does not have as much language as poppy war and yellow face, which are other books I've read by her. It deals with a lot of heavy topics like racism and imperialism, and there's a lot of bullying. There's also some physical abuse and violence and murder throughout. It definitely has a dark and dreary tone to the entire book. There's some suicidal thoughts, drinking, depression, a very very light lgbtq undertone to a certain character relationship but could be completely red as friendship, and some magic. I would overall give it a 16 or 17 plus age rating, just because it's such a heavy book!
