Today I described this book as "a surprisingly bleak French novel suffused with ennui" and I think that sums it up so far. I don't like anyone in it. That's not always a deal-breaker for me, but I'm also bored by everyone and also do not care at all what happens to them.

I don't love either of the two free versions of this on Audible, so maybe I'll see if it's better in print.
