The wit and wryness of the authors sense of humor are also incredible. Laughed out loud multiple times.

The writing is superbly instrumented with imagery and analogies to woodworking and fishing. The movie focuses on very different parts of the story than the book but both are able to spectacularly capture the grain and form of the work. Both were a pleasure.

I’ve noticed that the characters in this book all carry a certain weariness of life. They seem to have lived lives decorated with happiness but furnished by melancholy. It’s interesting; it certainly makes sense given the context of the book but I wonder if the author’s other novels are like this and if they have characters who are carrying similarly heavy burdens from life. Perhaps I lack perspective.
