And she doesn’t even think of changing the system herself. Her Dad suggests it instead of the brutal betrayal and likely destruction of her (however unbelievable) love interest; she doesn’t think of it herself.

In a different book, on a different page, the main character revealing that she’s just been stringing the love interest along for the entire story so far, and intends to use him as a bargaining chip for the family with the monsters who have pursued them the entire book and are beating down the door would be quite a moment. Here it isn’t; it could have been a great moment but falls flat, unearned.

As frustrating as it is story wise, I like that they take no for an answer

Maybe what frustrates me is there’s so much conversational wand-waving; someone speaks, and that’s how things are now. Hana, having previously shown no indication of self hatred is suddenly crying that she is a parasite. And their attraction (and his character) still isn’t believable to me.

Haruto should get more credit, but it’s still frustrating that she isn’t finding the information or witnessing it firsthand, but hearing about it after someone else made the hero play. This book could have been written in a very exciting way, and wasn’t.

Jeepers. Were I not reading this for a challenge, this is the moment where I would nope the hell out, at the inexplicable lift delivery where suddenly characters are AU to allow the moment to proceed, who display no awkwardness as being suddenly face to face with a stranger’s coochie. I’m sure all mothers wish birth and delivery was that fast and painless. And no tearing.

Oh good, a love triangle shoehorned in, because clearly the only way Han’s has value is if another man loves her.
