Okay, so a few things already...
1) it stars off immediately and doesn't give any background information
2) because of the 1st reason, I'd suggest reading her other series first (Kingdom of Dark Magic) since there's world building in there (and this book is set in the same world)
3) this book is also in 3rd person which isn't my favorite
