The inconsistency of the “Indian threat.” They’re always there. Stealing horses. Gomez and Kicking Wolf. Taking pot shots. But they don’t out right kill them. It’s inconsistent with the dead and massacred travelers they come across. Why would they not be murdered in their sleep? The only excuse is because kicking wolf wants to”sport” ? That’s weak. Pg. 334

McMurty’s amazing characters of Call and Gus unfortunately paint him into a corner in Dead Man’s Walk. McMurty tries to hard to line up the grown adult versions of Call and Gus from LD with their youthful versions in Dead Man’s. Thus, the reader is often told, not shown. “I should have kept my rifle handier,” Call said, annoyed with himself for having neglected sound procedure.
