Coates conveys the difficulties of raising a Black child in a way that speaks to my own personal fears surrounding parenthood, without crippling them with fear. I love how he presents a dichotomy: Black life in America as opposed to Black life abroad (specifically France). In the only experience I have ever had outside the US, I felt the same way he did: as if I belonged there, as if I was supposed to be there.

i'm almost a bit sad to be almost done. there are at least three passages that blew me away in their beauty and honesty. this is definitely a book i will be buying a physical copy of. i feel so silly for not reading it sooner/seeing it as a challenge i had to prepare for!

i'm floored by how much emotional and educational content Coates is capable of injecting in his prose effortlessly, and with so few words, without feeling bloated or as if he's trying too hard. i have also never been able to relate to an author's personal musings on race and what it means to be Black and how they came to know their identity so much. masterclass in everything
