I love the fact that Peggy, the main character, through which the challenge of being a woman at that point in history is illustrated, also has a twin sister who is autistic, to the point that she can't be left alone, which adds interest to the story, and an extra layer of difficulty for Peggy attending Oxford University as freely as "the gowns".

A perfect novel. It unearths facts and perspectives about the First World War, often from a woman's perspective, that I never knew or was aware of. There was a death by suicide of an older man who didn't have to fight, as a result of all the deaths of his younger fighting work colleagues.
