I’ve heard very mixed responses (not about the quality of the book but the marketing/subgenre) but I do love to support an Aussie debut author and the ebook was on steep sale. So far, I’ve appreciated the warning from reviewers that this isn’t cozy. So the plucked out eyeball didn’t horrify as much as it might have.

I’m enjoying her writing style and the wonderfully subtle use of an Australian-coded setting, but I’m finding the characters and dark magic very depressing. Not sure I can stick this one out.
