I don't have to remind myself that this book was written in 1954 - the dated language and subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) misogyny constantly reminds me. The only smart woman 'can't keep a man', and there are constant descriptions of her slim, strong hands and smooth blonde hair and so on. I don't blame the story - no author can future-proof a novel - but it is something I do find a bit annoying.
