It feels like it was written by someone with a slightly sideways relationship to reality. Both controlled and a little unhinged. It doesn’t read like someone trying to write Beautiful Fantasy Prose. There’s too much genuine peculiarity in it. I wouldn’t want every fantasy novel to read this way. But when the writer actually has the imagination to sustain it, it’s fascinating.

McKillip’s language itself seems to be the imaginative experience. The strangeness belongs to the world rather than decorating it.

The prose is unusual and distinctly fantastical, but it doesn’t seem desperate to prove that the world is elaborate. It gives you strange names, creatures, history, and magic with remarkably little fuss. You’re expected to orient yourself.
