This is a characteristically Russian book. It is difficult to find out what it is really about - nothing much seems to happen. The conversations in the book also seem to be about nothing - they are abstract, philosophical and so on. The protagonist, Max, keeps meeting a helpful female who turns up out of nowhere and seems to be an angel - again typically Russian. Russians sem to be more open to the spiritual world.
