Well, I’m sticking to my first inclination of reading this slowly so that I might savor its simplicity, warmth and wisdom. I feel like Jayber conjures the combined voices of grandparents, aunts and uncles long gone. Previously, I had only read some of Berry’s essays and a poem or two. After hearing of his passing yesterday, I plan to continue savoring this novel. But you can bet I will read more Wendell Berry.

I’m taking this slow, at first not on purpose, but now I’m trying to save it, doling out a little at a time. I’m nearly 60 years old, at a time in life when our family is beginning to lose the older generation. Jayber’s story reminds me of listening to my grandmother, my aunts, uncles, and my father and mother, as they told stories of what it was like to grow up. For years, I rolled my eyes. Now I am rapt.
