Chapter 43 was incredible. I never expected such a wholesome chapter in the middle of this book but it was played so perfectly and was a very welcome pause from the depressing and infuriating state of Berlin.

I love how Fallada changes the narrators writing style and tone to match the character who is being followed. Like Heberle uses a lot of animal based metaphors and analogies but Escherich is extremely descriptive and describes the exact clothing and appearance of every character and room he’s in.

The pacing and character development in this book is incredible and better than any piece of media I have ever interacted with.
