At a point where play-by-play is so necessary. Ludwig Windthorst being the actual real life Tyrion Lannister and GRRM likely being oblivious to his existence: that’s the magic of History.
Bismarck very nearly at the height of power and threatening to kill himself because he didn’t get his way on the appointment of a postmaster general, he’s a fucking lunatic and he has me crying laughing

Was pulling my hair out trying to get through Steinberg’s explanation of the the Holstein-Schleswig war w/ Denmark but it was worth it to get a wonderful image of a 51 year old Bismarck and 69 year old King Wilhelm I having dueling sobbing fits over peace with Austria, just some elderly ass men scream crying to each other

Been meaning to get around to this for a number of years now. Not a massive fan of the writing style but it does go down smooth. Historical writing is real difficult, since it’s hard to strike a balance of digestibility, elegance, and analysis/interpretation. I try to extend grace!
