Like other 1 and 2 star reviews I agree this was gratuitous in its use of ambiguous technique which, instead of creating a scary, mysterious effect, made the book a headache to read. Also agree that the convoluted rambling sentences didn’t help. I think the big issue here is that it’s told from the point of the governess and her chaotic mindset does not allow for the suspense and terror to build effectively.
