I love this book. I love the mention of William Le Queux’s novels - Spies of the Kaiser, and The Invasion of 1910 - as British fears of enemy spies shifted from France to Germany. I love learning how tied the Diesel engine is to submarines, battleships, and rival Navies. I also know the final part of this book, or some of it, will transform into a True Crime book.

As the book gets closer to the invention of the Diesel engine, it is more and more destined to become a great pick for the ‘To Sea in September’ reading event. Rudolph works on engine theory and new design in Munich, just when Wilhelm II starts wondering how to create a German navy that can challenge Britain’s dominance at sea…

Already fascinated by Rudolph Diesel, his life and death. This book officially gets me reading for 'To Sea in September' (reading event), even though a lot of the story will not put me out on the ocean. But, believe me, it's a worthy pick, on a few counts. The city Augsburg will always remind me of Bond accidentally blowing his cover, in OHMSS (movie version), when speaking of Augsburg.
