The most fascinating piece of argument-making, thesis-building Whitehead does (so well) across Nickel Boys, Harlem Shuffle, and now Crook Manifesto is the idea that, through both formalized and unwritten rules of racism embedded in our social fabric, the kind of living-making we choose to criminalize, what kind of existing we decide is not allowed vs. the kind we decide is fine, encouraged, is insidiously arbitrary.

The way Whitehead uses “they did a deal for”, across both books, in reference to furniture sales, jewelry fencing, rough-up jobs, missing person investigations, and murders, with the same deadpan tone, with the same matter-of-factness, daring you to have a problem with it, daring you to call him out on it, is just totally emblematic of what makes these books so good.
