I find it interesting that today’s illiteracy problem dates back to the 1840s when reading was THE entertainment. While Thoreau’s town is filled with the well-educated still they “are under-bred and low-lived and illiterate”(Thoreau 101). Sounding like a true book snob he groups actual illiterate individuals with people “who has learned to read only for what is for children and feeble intellects” (101)
