These strings vibrate in a particular pattern and depending on the pattern , the string vibrations could form a familiar particle from the standard model. The mathematics provide for a way to join even unify quantum mechanics and general relativity, including gravity. The mathematics also predict addl unfamiliar dimensions up to 11, so small we cannot see them and have some difficulty even understanding them

The technical aspects of M theory are way to much (also of string theory) but i sure enjoy the idea that physicists understand the world at this fundamental level and try to explain it to the rest of us dummies.
