This is a very difficult read. It’s significant to how historians understand Mao’s life and regime, but - as others have pointed out - there is far from enough context to understand fully Chang and Halliday’s interpretation of Mao’s life. I have contextual knowledge (I teach this subject) and, at times, even I found myself lost.
