After joes leg heals, he hears about a circus that is entering town at the end of the month. Meanwhile he continues playing with the kids and helping them with a pig as a special act for a fair taking place the same day the circus is in town. However, Joe isn’t hired by the circus due to his lack of flash that he lost from lack of practice. He had to run away again due to authorities after him again

After his dads death, Joe is sent to a boys school for carpenters, where the other boys are hostile to him. Joe escapes in an attempt to get to Portland in order to get back to his circus, but he gets tired and is injured by a fence. A country family named the Dawsons helps him recover and he gets hired by them as a farm boy.
