girl there should be a drinking game for whenever a grrm-ism shows up uninterrogated in lit. grrm invented "hedge knights" for asoiaf there were real robber knights and real landless knights at various times but no "hedge knights" lolol. I guess it's fitting here since this IS a fantasy but Arden is taking pains to look and sound historical so it's just awkwardly funny and I know what her fandoms are now

I'm liking it and it's flying by, though it's giving more "beach read" than heady fantasy because we are operating on fairytale rules, girlboss cleverness, and plot armor for a real historical person who had none of these things. I can already tell where the romance is going and I'm not opposed, but I'm not book-boyfriending anybody here either

Jams Jams Reading her meta text at the end of the novel is also so illuminating as to the many baffling choices + shies away from something truly compelling that could occur in the work for fear of confusing her audience

Augh I can see it. One thing that bugged me in the Winternight trilogy was how Arden seems to have this idea that there's only one possible way she can render her story. Not because of tight plot reasons, but because it sounds like ideas about what to do and what not to do in writing that come to her externally and she just kinda accepts that, and then she does the common middle-of-the-road thing. She really reveals too much about herself in those afterwords lol
