I’m struggling with the casual racist language. I understand she is interested in literary realism, however as it is written in 2002 I’m find her overuse of the n word to be jarring. Her commitment to the tone of white dialogue in the 1970’s South comes at the cost of alienating a black reader. This blatant use of language doesn’t feel earned like a gothic writer such as Flannery O’Conner.
