His doctor, with his fierce energy, only looked at him and shrugged. "Listen, Graham. You're getting over a serious illness."

The face he revealed was dark with blood from lying face down in the water. The top layer of skin was loose and slouching away; a young man's bloated face pressed through beneath. A rust-coloured bubble appeared and popped in the corner of a swollen eye. The smell struck Graham with near physical force.
