The whole book reads like if George Lucas was given free rein to direct Star Wars. The concept is quite interesting but the writing is a slog and gets in the way. It seems that the author had some ideas about short stories about the pilgrims and tried to stitch them together - even then some sentences seem juvenile or drooling for a long time. I still don't care for any of the characters in the story; nor the Shrike.
