“I take a bite and chew. I feel the texture of the food in my mouth. I find myself thinking about how plants can turn light and water into calories and what a magic trick that truly is. Very quickly, though, my mind moves from the poetry of photosynthesis to thinking about the people involved in producing this meal and their sacrifices.”

Might be a DNF. This author just drops these hot takes that keep annoying the hell out of me. I.e. calling crystals “nincompoopery” (idc about crystals but it’s close minded given the topic), saying being vegan is incredibly selfish, saying that nature is a flat, lifeless “process” and that connecting to it is ridiculous (though she later connects w/nature, learns different I guess)… idk if I can do it

“After preparing my breakfast, I sit down at the table to eat and deny the urge to pull out my phone and surf TikTok, like I normally would. I look at my bowl of oatmeal and think about it. I ponder the swollen bodies of each individual oat, the plump blueberries. Even the microscopic bugs alive in the yogurt. Although I find it counterproductive to my appetite to think about them for too long.”

“One teaching is something he calls Pagan Grace, where I am encouraged before every meal to consider the substances that are about to sacrifice themselves so they can nourish me and become part of my life force.”
