They are…. lol jk ;) these characters did seem like atleast 50 in my mind prior to finding out ages

My take from it was that despite being so young (late 30s-early 40s) they were forced to emotionally age much quicker than their peers due to their difficult homes & trauma of their childhood, which is why descriptively they seemed much older than what they truly were even into adulthood.
@ Abbegail -- i see your point! now that I am further into the book, it's settling with me a little better once you get more background on what their childhoods were like growing up.
