“All my life people have called me gifted and I sometimes wonder if what I really have is anxiety and depression, if my giftedness isn’t really a terror, which I carry around, all the time, and which spurs me to perform at high levels. Terror that the world is fundamentally insecure. That the bottom could drop out of it, at any time. That if I am not brilliant and high performing, my parents will stop loving me.
