Cloven Country is a geography of the devil-plagued parts of the UK – Devil’s Bridges, stones both standing and fallen stones, haunted roads – as identified in folktales and recorded legends. I enjoyed the entire book, but I especially like the bits about the devil in Child ballads and intend to do further digging there.
