Instead of cell phones they had footman and ladies maids that function in the same fashion.
To employ so many in a household was very inexpensive. Such work was preferable to all strata of the middle class

That the author would bring up this issue it’s not a little surprising as she has mentioned many interesting points that surface during the period of this period, specifically Geriacult’s painting of the raft of the Medusa.
