Marlon Slack Curious as to your thoughts about this.

Magen Honestly, it’s taking me ages to read because I don’t really gel with Weir’s writing style. Felt the same with The Martian. This one feels kind of like a super eager guy you met on the bus had a cool dream and is now telling you all about it. Lots of gosh-darn what-the-heck going on which just seems incredibly unrealistic for a grown man working in a school and as a scientist. It’s very very heavy on the science and backstory which is fine but why do we need 150 pages of it? I’ve been skipping a lot of the science-heavy sections that don’t really progress the story at all once you know that X and Y make Z. I’ll give you an update when I finish!

Kim I agree, I was kind of on the fence about DNFing early on cos I feel like Weir writes a certain kind of "cool science guy" and I didn't enjoy that so much in The Martian either. But once a certain someone shows up I was all in.

Marlon Slack Yeah, I'm in the same boat as you. The protagonist's voice is very strong and he's fucking insufferable to me. The whedonism humor is really tiring and he's atrocious at writing dialogue and human interaction.
