Vance explains his hometown, hillbilly culture, his family's dysfunctional history, and the affect it all had his childhood. A quote I found fitting was "My people were extreme, but in the service of something - defending a sister's honor or ensuring that a criminal paid for his crimes."(Vance 17) Here he explains that his people had issues but were good at heart. I predict that his mother is going to remarry again.

Vance writes about how his grandma (Mamaw) helped him in his darkest times growing up. She inspires him to go college. He joins the Marines to pay for school. I chose the quote "Mamaw was my keeper, my protector... No matter what life threw at me, I'd be okay because she was there to protect me" (Vance 166). It is neat that he went from his hard life to reaching his goals. I predict that he'll do well in college.
