when Challengers was most popular there was a statement that was adopted as the absolute truth. “Art loves Patrick, Patrick loves Tashi, Tashi loves Tennis” right or wrong, it attempts to put a name to each character’s internal motivation. In chapter 7, Lucy tries to do the same. I disagree with her conclusion: “Martin loves Lucy, Lucy loves Susannah, and Susannah loves a life free from their town.”

The author does a phenomenal job of giving Susannah and Lucy different perspectives, opinions, and internal voices. Although they are both in love in a deep, and carnal way Lucy’s love is tinged with shame and fear. whereas Susannah is resigned and unashamed.

“I’ll marry you if you get past the shame of being with me.” Susannah is so old and young in this statement. There is almost a childish wish wrapped in her adult perception of Lucy’s true feelings. A theme we see communicated a lot throughout this book, shown without direct statement for the reader.

Lucy’s inner monologue is so authentically 15 years old, it’s making me sick
