"Thus they pass on from room to room, raising the pictured Dedlocks for a few brief minutes as the young gardener admits the light, and reconsigning them to their graves as he shuts it out again. It appears to Mr Guppy and his inconsolable friend, that there is no end to the Dedlocks, whose family greatness seems to consist in their never having done anything to distinguish themselves, for seven hundred years."

jacob graham I love this book—I hope you're enjoying it! My favorite Dickens so far. A desert island book for me 🏝️📖

Thank you, Jacob - I am loving it so far! The way Dickens creates the atmosphere at the opening of his books draws me right in. I can't think of an author who does that better than him!

jacob graham Totally agree! I love how Dickens writes about fog, mud, snow, rain—the elements and nature. There is, towards the end of the novel, a wonderful chapter full of snow. It starts as rain and turns to snow, actually. One of my favorite chapters in Bleak House, and one of my favorite scenes in all of English literature in which precipitation features heavily.

Also, shoutout to the hypothetical dinosaur that opens Bleak House 😂 Didn't see that coming when I started chapter one!
