Wow--the US' obsession with Cuba during the 19th century suddenly makes a ton of sense when viewed through a Confederate lens. The US wanted to control Cuba--in particular diminishing Spain's control over it--in order to preserve the institution of slavery.

Honestly, starting off with Columbus was a genius move to drive home the book’s subtitle. For why is it that Americans are so obsessed with claiming a SPANISH person as the discoverer of “their” land when a) Columbus wasn’t British, and b) he had never once set foot on soil that would come to be claimed as the United States?
