Barbara Trapido is one of my favorite authors, but so far this is slower-going than the rest of her work. Because it's (apparently) semi-autobiographical, it necessarily lacks her distinctive plotting -- what's most interesting isn't the story but the child's-eye glimpse of South Africa in the 1950s, with all of its increasingly institutionalized racism and weird Anglophilia.
