In How to Build a Heart by Maria Padian, Izzy Crawford changes from someone who is afraid of being judged for her background into someone who begins to understand that she does not have to hide who she is. "“I think I'm nervous because you haven't let me in on the plan.” (Padian 56). This was the begining before Izzy is motivated by her strong desire to fit in and feel like she belongs.

Padian uses conflict to show how Izzy's secrets begin to hurt her relationships. Izzy is afraid that her friends will judge her family, so she tries to keep parts of her life hidden. This makes her feel alone and creates tension between her and people she cares about. Izzy realizes that "Secrets don't stay secret for very long. It all comes out, in the end". (Padian 186). Makes her realize can't belong unless honest.
