Dean repeatedly leeching off, borrowing from, or outright spending the hard-earned wages of his wives (like Mary Lou and later Luanne/Carolyn) while leaving them stranded or broke is one of the most exploitative realities of their lifestyle.

That question hits on one of the most absurd, practical glosses of the entire book. Kerouac makes their wild, cross-country coasting look like a seamless, endless adventure, but under the hood, their "funding" was a chaotic mix of petty hustle, exploitation, manual labor, and sheer freeloading.
