Often rather painfully dry, but astonishingly thorough. If you stick with it for long enough, it becomes rather engaging in many sections. The history documented is horrifying, illuminating, and utterly fascinating. The level of detail that the author goes into is incredible.

This book is so gargantuan and such a slog to read. I've picked up some interesting details along the way, but on the whole, it's just not really engaging enough to continue to persist with reading it to the end. IIRC one of the major issues was that it was way too dry, and I recall something about repetitiveness or endless rehashing... maybe some day I'll return to this, but I rather doubt I'll ever finish it.
