I think the detail about "the old woman who never left the dark north wing and was simply known as “she” in the family" was probably meant to add a sense of mystery to the story, but I’ve been so bored that it didn’t really spark any curiosity in me. I’d say the argument between Olivia and Anson in this last part was the only thing that added some color to the story.
