Went into the book blind
Immediately I didn’t expect it to be written in free verse. I do think dearest Applegate did to it quite well.
This is such an easy read of course but it’s also very well done. I think it’s so interesting how it switches between perspectives, then to a but of trivia, and back to the story seamlessly. I also appreciate how clear and quick the imagery is conveyed little words.

I will say One thing I didn’t expect and was delighted by was so educational and scientific it is. And I always love a tale of nature that doesn’t shy from violence. I love than this book doesn’t demonize predators either. The mentions of the shark and its attack are very neutral. It’s unfortunate to our characters but not even they feel offended by him. The only ones so far that have been criticized are people. As it should be.
I’m just praying for a plot twist is all I’m saying.

So far, Odder is fun and brave, and careless. She almost gets eaten by a shark and gets rescued by the local aquarium which she’d been in before. Let me guess… as a baby her mom was injured by humans (likely) and passed, she was rescued by Monterey Aquarium and raised in captivity till independent enough to release… she leans to be more careful after rehab 2… the end.
I’m sure more is going to happen that that’s the general gist of the story from what I can already predict. I hope I am wrong and something more unexpected happens, or a more challenging moral scenario is explored.
Regardless im not saying i think this is bad or super boring so far… it’s cute it’s simple. It’s fine. But not as witty as i hoped. The artwork carries it mostly.
