Those who endured the camps remember the men who moved the barracks offering comfort to others, handing over their last bread without hesitation. They may have been few, but their example was enough to tell an enduring truth: everything can be stripped from a human being except one thing—the final remnant of freedom—the power to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to decide one’s own way forward.
