Buddhism and Confusacism had to work together, when it came to Vietnam, monks were used politically because they learned chinese characters becoming advisors to kings etc. confuscism took over because of its philosophical prowess and they began to harbor a competitive nature against the monks, so monks withdrew for their place in the courts and the confucians took over
